Studio Monzai

Welcome to Studio Monzai, where movement meets stillness, and feeling becomes form.

I grew up in China and have been drawn to making images for as long as I can remember. Sketching was my earliest way of observing the world—places, people, details, and fleeting moments I wanted to hold onto.

My practice developed organically through drawing, travel, photography, and a longstanding love of prints and black-and-white imagery. Over time, I became increasingly drawn to bold, free brushstrokes and intuitive marks—gestures that preserve movement, spontaneity, and emotion rather than trying to perfect or control every surface.

For me, art is deeply personal. Many of my paintings begin with a place I have visited, a memory, or a moment that stayed with me, but I do not want those origins to define how the work is experienced. I prefer not to explain the story behind each piece. Once a painting leaves my hands, I believe it should be free to resonate differently with each person who encounters it.

I am less interested in reproducing exactly what I saw than in capturing what remained: a feeling, an atmosphere, a sense of movement or quiet. Through color, gesture, and form, I look for the point where energy and peace can exist together.
